IPR & Legal committee and Film Entertainment Media and Event (FEME) committee of GCCI of GCCI jointly organized a webinar on 24th April, 2021 on “Rights & Royalties of Authors & Performing Artists by Dr.G.R. Raghvender, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Law & Justice, Government of India”.
Shri Natubhai Patel, President, GCCI and Shri Hemant Shah, Senior Vice President, GCCI in their welcome speech mentioned that topic of webinar is very important as many artists are not aware about their rights, and stated that GCCI is keen to promote the Entertainment industry of Gujarat.
Shri Jatin Trivedi, chairman, IPR & Legal committee, GCCI gave brief information about judgement passed by the Intellectual Property Appellate Board (IPAB), upholding the rights of the Indian Performing Right Society Limited and its lyricist, music composer and music publisher members to claim royalties in respect of the broadcast of lyrics and music underlying sound recordings by FM Radio Stations in India.
Dr. Aasit Shah, Chairman, Film Entertainment Media and Event (FEME) committee gave a brief introduction of Dr. G.R. Raghvender and stated that Dr. Raghvender did not only introduced the
copyrights but regularize the digitization of documents of copyrights.
Dr. G.R. Raghvendra in his key address discussed that 2012 amendments were very disruptive policy initiative which cleared many doubts about the right of artists and its implementation and later it was clarified that as per section 17, the author is the 1st owner of copyrights. He further stated that the Indian Performing Right Society (IPRS) is one of the top 10 most emerging performing rights society in the world and gave information about the Copyrights Act and some of the rules introduced by the Central Government for royalty and rights of artists including the new concept introduced the right to receive royalties.
